EAF Technology: State of the art and future trends

World steel production through the electric arc furnace (EAF) route has reached 296.8 Mt in 1997 from 206.9 Mt in 1988, equivalent to respectively 33.8% and 26.6% of total crude steel production. This share shows a linear annual increase 7.2% during the decade. It is clear that the EAF route has been established as one of the major player in the steel production.

The first IISI report on EAF technology was published in 1981. Since then the IISI Committee on Technology (TECHCO) has twice revised and re-issued the report to reflect the status and emerging technology of EAF.

This then is the fourth report on the same subject. However, taking into consideration the rapid changes in EAF technology, availability of new raw materials, the demonstration of new plant configurations and environmental constraints surrounding EAF, this issue seeks to focus on the state of the art of EAF technology and future development.
