Tata Steel Europe: A workforce with added vitality

Challenge

Corus believes that, with the right advice, sickness absences are often preventable.

Action

The Vitality Centre is a lifestyle clinic that opened in March 2008, at Tata Steel Europe’s IJmuiden steelworks in the Netherlands. Operated in collaboration with the company’s main health and insurance provider, the clinic has been established to reintegrate employees into the workplace after ill health and to promote healthier lifestyles.

The clinic gives guidance on diet and exercise, and develops programmes for people to reduce weight, to develop strength or just to stay in shape.

Outcome

During regular company medical check-ups, around 500 employees were found to have potential health risks. The clinic has provided each employee with a tailored exercise and health advice programme on how to improve their health by adopting a better lifestyle.
