Investing in communities

The steel industry makes products that society needs, provides employment, and contributes to economic development.

It is not only employees, contractors and customers who are affected by the activities of steel companies, but also suppliers and residents in the vicinity of steel plants and related steelmaking sites.

Many steel companies build roads, transport systems, ports and hospitals in the areas around their sites. In developed markets surplus land within sites is often offered to benefit the local community. Some donate products to help rebuild communities in the wake of disasters such as earthquakes and fires.

These investments show how the steel industry exercises its commitment to social sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
