Our first Breakthrough Technology Conference was held in Abu Dhabi, UEA, on 5-6 December 2023.
This event aims to provide a platform for the technical community to network, exchange and explore the technology options that will be necessary to decarbonise the steel industry.
The presentations delivered at this conference are available for download on this page.
Day 1 – Tuesday, 5 December:
Introduced by Dr. Rizwan JANJUA, Head, Technology, World Steel Association (worldsteel)
In this session, steel industry leaders set out their plans and initiatives for the adoption of low-carbon steelmaking technologies to reduce emissions and meet climate goals.
Session 1: Carbon recycling and reduction
Session chaired by Dr. Fernando ACTIS, Vice-President, Global Research & Development, Ternium
The strive for efficiency in our processes and maximising the use of scrap are important elements to enable industrial and societal transformation. In this session, steelmakers highlight the latest technological initiatives for reducing and reusing resources.
Session 1 ends with a panel discussion: Strategic pathways for the transition technologies.
Day 2 – Wednesday, 6 December:
Session 2: Hydrogen
Session chaired by Dr. Kurt SATZINGER, Lead of Strategic Projects, voestalpine Steel Division.
Hydrogen technologies offer potential options for ironmaking at an industrial scale without the release of CO2. This session will explore key hydrogen initiatives in the steel industry.
Session 3: Electrification
This session is chaired by Andrew PURVIS, Director, Sustainable Manufacturing, World Steel Association (worldsteel)
The session highlights the production of premium-grade steels using scrap and alternative fuels through the EAF process.
The event closes with a panel discussion: Optimisation of the iron and steel value chain towards a low-carbon industry.
